On April 12, 2014, the city of Gatlinburg will host the seventh annual Mountain Man Memorial March. The weather for this city in the Great Smoky Mountains is expected to be in the mid-70's with no rain in the forecast. This will be a great to run in the mountains or cheer on the runners.
The first Mountain Man Memorial March was held in April, 2008 by the University of Tennessee Army R.O.T.C, Rocky Top Battalion to honor 1st Lieutenant Frank Walkup, IV, a former classmate, who died in combat in Iraq. The event has grown each year since its inception.
Participants may choose run or to march. There are further categories for both teams and individuals, and also, civilian and military. There various course lengths. Participants may choose to sign up to wear a picture of a fallen service member and to wear a weighted back pack (ruck) while marching.
The families of those lost in military battle are called Gold Star Families. The Gold Star Families are beautifully honored at this event and at the dinner the night before. Gold Star Families hotel rooms for the weekend are paid for by the American Legion Post 2. Gold Star Families come from all over the country to see their loved ones' honored.
American Legion Post 2, in Knoxville, Tennessee has taken over management of the Mountain Man Memorial March and has done an amazing job with this event and every year it has grown. It is a professionally run and managed event.
