Fred Hagstrom, a Carleton College professor since 1984, has been named the recipient of the 2014 Minnesota Book Artist Award. His piece, "Passage," depicts the historical slave trade tragedies through photographs and hand-drawn images of slaves and poor conditioned slave ships.

Hagstrom, who teaches printmaking, drawing, art and narrative, and artist’s books at Carleton, received his BA from Hamline University and MFA from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He also studied at the University of Chicago and in Paris, France. His artistry has been shown in museum collections and galleries all throughout the United States, including our very own Walker Art Center and Minneapolis Institute of Arts.

The award is presented by MCBA and the Minnesota Book Awards and is sponsored by the Lerner Publishing Group. It recognizes those from Minnesota with exceptional artistic works and many contributions to Minnesota's community of book arts.
