2014 LLWS: Chicago defeats Las Vegas and wins the US Championship title

Saturday, Las Vegas, Nevada played Chicago, Illinois for the US Championship at the Little League World Series (LLWS) in South Williamsport, Pennsylvania. Saturday’s games were live on ABC, and each game can be viewed on the ESPN website at any time.

The Las Vegas Little League team was undefeated at these LLWS games, and they were favored to win. The game was close today and these two teams were equally matched. Each team had quite a few ups and down, and the emotion could be read on their faces and in their body language. In the top of the fifth inning, the score was tied 5-5, and then Chicago scored 2 runs. At the top of the sixth inning, Chicago had three outs in roughly two minutes. Final score, 5-7 Chicago, according to the Little League website.

During the first game played today, South Korea defeated the Japan Little League team, and they will advance to the World Championship Little League game tomorrow. For more on the South Korea vs. Japan game, click here.

Sunday are the two final games in the 2014 LLWS in South Williamsport. The first game for third place will be played at 10 a.m. Eastern and will be shown live on ESPN, and will include Japan and Las Vegas, Nevada. The second game is the World Championship game at 3 p.m. and it will air live on ABC and it will include South Korea and Chicago. South Korea is the only undefeated team at these 2014 LLWS games.

Mo’Ne Davis from the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Little League team has created quite a stir at the 2014 LLWS games, and this week she appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated magazine; the 13-year-old Mo’Ne came into the media spotlight over the last week as the pitcher of her Little League team. Mo’Ne Davis is the youngest athlete ever to appear on the cover. ESPN called Mo’Ne the best player on the Philadelphia Little League team, and her pitches average 70 mph. This is the 75th annual Little League Baseball World Series and each year the LLWS games are played in South Williamsport, Pennsylvania. The annual LLWS event brings tens of thousands of families, fans, and players from around the world to watch 10 day of games. The LLWS games can be dramatic, heart breaking, or an absolute joy for the winning teams. Making it to Williamsport is a hard earned dream for most of the 11 – 12 year olds (and 13-year-olds whose birthday is after May 1, 2014), and most of the players are astute baseball fans.

Each year, the LLWS starts with sixteen teams; eight United States (US) and eight international teams. It’s double elimination and each team gets to play three games at the LLWS with the final game being a consolation game. The final championship game will consist of one US team and one International team, and that game will be played on August 24, 2014.

If a LLWS team loses or wins at the LLWS games, they return to their suite-like surroundings at The Grove and get to live like rock stars for the time they are there. Amenities include: a large swimming pool, video games, a room full of ping pong tables, and new friends who have come from all over the world. No parents allowed!
