2014 Ironman Texas results: Docherty and Williamson top fine field

On Saturday May 8, 2014 an excellent field of pro triathletes vied for top honors in Ironman Texas in the Woodlands.

There were several pros quite capable of winning the race.

The favorites for the pro men were Jordan Rapp, Bevan Docherty, Tim Reed, Matthew Russell and Chris McDonald, but still there were four or five others with the credentials to win as well.

Brandon Marsh posted a sizzling swim time of 46:38 and took a lead of over a minute onto the 112 mile bike course.

For much of the race Jordan Rapp held down the lead thanks to his sensational 4:19:11 bike split, but he was no match for the foot speed of Olympian Bevan Docherty.

Docherty is well know for his running ability and seemed to have no problem running down Rapp.

Docherty charged to the front on the marathon course and ran his way to a five minute victory over Matthew Russell who eventually passed a tiring Jordan Rapp for second place.

Justin Daerr rounded out the podium for the pro men.

The winning time for Docherty was a very fast 8:09:37, but was not quite fast enough to beat the course record.

The race favorite for the pro women was Kelly Williamson and she lived up to her top billing with a dominating performance on the 26.2 mile marathon course

Julia Gajer had what seemed to be an insurmountable lead as she began the run, but Williamson had the race of her life and was not to be denied.

She passed Julia Gajer near the mid-point of the run and never looked back.

Gajer hung on for second and Amber Ferreira finished third.

The pros battled it out for prize money and Kona Ranking Points and top age-group athletes had the opportunity to earn the right to compete in the Ironman World Championships in Kona in the Fall of 2014.
