The Iowa Cubs, triple-A affiliate of the Chicago Cubs, open their 2014 season on Thursday, April 3 at Principal Park against the Memphis Redbirds. The 2014 season looks to be an intriguing one for fans as the team promises to have some of the top prospects in the Cubs system.

Certainly the most hyped player to begin the season in Des Moines is Javier Baez. The Cubs drafted Baez in the 1st round (9th overall pick) of the 2011 draft. Baez is on the fast track to Chicago and will likely finish the season in Chicago.

Baez, the 5th rated prospect in all of baseball according to Baseball America, may begin the season at shortstop but the possibility exists that he could also move around the infield in order to find a spot sooner in Chicago. Baez hit 37 home runs in 2013 between single-A Daytona and double-A Tennessee. Baez promises to be an exciting player for fans to watch in 2014.

Joining Baez in Des Moines will be Arismendy Alcantara. Alcantara is rated the 100th best prospect in all of baseball according to Baseball America. Alcantara played in the Futures Game during All-Star weekend in 2013, homering at Citi Field in New York. Alcantara will be the primary second baseman for the I-Cubs.

Looking ahead, I-Cubs fans may see another top prospect later in the season. Kris Bryant, the 8th rated prospect in baseball according to Baseball America, will begin the season at double-A Tennessee. Bryant is also on the fast track to Chicago and he will likely see time in Des Moines at some point in 2014.

The full roster for the 2014 Iowa Cubs should be released sometime on Tuesday. For fans in Des Moines, 2014 is shaping up to be an exciting year.
