BELLBROOK- On Monday, May 19, the meaning of Earth Day was brought to light through illustrations by six Bellbrook Middle School finalists. Susan Steele, from the Bellbrook Garden Club, presented these talented artists to the Bellbrook City Council while officially naming them as winners of the 2014 Earth Day poster contest.

The Bellbrook Garden Club has stimulated a love of gardening and has helped protect nature, trees, plants and birds in the Bellbrook community for the past 72 years. Members of the Garden Club have the skills of a “green thumb” to encourage civic pride and improvement. Their work around the city has provided comfort and a homey feel for all residents.

“Earth Day has a special significance for us,” Steele said. “Though we nurture a love of planet Earth all year, Earth Day gives us another opportunity to promote stewardship. We do this in a way of our annual poster contest.”

The goal of the Earth Day Poster Contest is for students to design a poster that promotes the ideals of Earth Day: the meaning of keeping a clean environment and awareness of the importance. Through the guidance of their teachers and the inspiration of the Garden Club, the posters are collected and judged on the ability for the illustration to successfully communicate a message, to have a quality design, to be neat and readable.

The 2014 competition was competitive as usual, but the winners prevailed. The winners of the Earth Day Poster Contest had previously named and their posters were displayed at the Sugar Maple Festival in the Bellbrook Garden Club booth. During the City Council meeting, the winners were officially announced. Because of these six contestants’ brilliant colors, innovated concepts of clean water, clean Earth, fresh air, clear skies and beautiful trees, the finalists were as follows:

First Place: Emily Mills- “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle”

Second Place: Alyssia Deiz- “What a Wonderful World”

Third Place Tie: Hallee Adams- “Save Your Mom-Go Green” and Abby Welsh- “Let it Grow”

Honorable Mentions: Sara Rogers- “Save the Earth” and Sara Wolf- “Happy Earth Day”
