Mandisa, Hillsong United, Need To Breathe, Casting Crowns, Switchfoot and Lecrae are up for the Dove Awards’ Artist of the Year trophy the Gospel Music Association (GMA) announced Wednesday.

The 45th Annual Dove Awards nominations were revealed in a press conference held at Lipscomb University in Tennessee. The nominations list is just as motley as the artists who delivered the news: Brandon Heath, Flame, Gordon Mote, KB, Jonathan McReynolds, Karen Peck, Love & The Outcome, Natalie Grant, Tasha Cobbs, TobyMac and Wayne Haun delivered the news. Winners will be announced at the Allen Arena located on Lipscomb’s campus on October 7 and will broadcast live on TBN.

Wayne Haun, a producer and songwriter leads all nominations with 12 (including producer of the year) while Hillsong United, Lecrae, Mandisa and Matt Maher each have 5 nods. Erica Campbell first solo record, "Help" garnered 4 nominations.

"In The Sanctuary" – Temple of Deliverance Women’s Choir which was recorded on DC-based label Habukkuk Music received a nomination for Traditional Gospel Album of the Year.

Honoring all genres of Christ-centered music, the Dove Award nominees reflect a gamut of styles and musical presentation. The award show recognizes the impact of gospel music, ministry and outstanding performance and is the only nationally broadcast award show for Christian music that represents a well-rounded , mixed bag of Christian Contemporary and Black Gospel music on its ballots, an adjustment that has been made in recent years under the leadership of GMA Executive Director Jackie Patillo.

Apparently the governing body of the Doves has made an effort to recognize the gifts of all those who do Christian music best by offering 20 broad categories. But being all inclusive can be complicated.

In reviewing the list of nominees, I noticed certain stand out choices distinguish the Doves as unique from other award shows.

For instance, artists that would not usually be on the same radio play list may find themselves co-mingling on the Dove ballot. Such is the case for the Gospel Performance of the Year category where Natalie Grant joins fellow nominees Hezekiah Walker, Tye Tribbett, Erica Campbell and Tamela Mann. Grant garnered the nomination for her passionate execution of the Bernie Herms produced “I Love the Lord.” Technically, the Whitney Houston classic belongs in the gospel category instead of the CCM category. Practically it does not. It’s odd to see Grant in the same company as the artists named because chances are you would not hear them on the same radio station (i.e., they do not typically reach the same audience.) But placing Grant in the Best CCM Performance category with a song would be mismatched. Tasha Cobb took the Dove home last year for her performance of "Break Every Chain."

Clearly they handle business a bit differently at The Dove Awards.

MC Andy Mineo, Best New Artist nominee, has been nominated twice in the Rap/Hip Hop category. A double-nomination outside of a collaboration is unheard of. The odds are in his favor as a seemingly “unstoppable” Mineo is featured on KB’s “100” and nominated twice individually for “You Can’t Stop Me” (from the album "Neverland") and “Stop the Traffic” (from the album "King Kulture). This may be a gospel first. Despite it's growth the Rap/ Holy Hip Hop field remains a microcosm dominated by a notable few and Mineo is certainly one of the King pin in the genre. Over the last year, Mineo has been one of the top rappers in mainstream and Christian Hip Hop in record sales and popularity, factors that may support his dominating the the Rap/Hip Hop category. Last year the Dove went to Mineo's touring partner and label mate Lecrae for his wor on the album "Gravity."

Winners of the Dove Awards are decided by votes from the GMA membership and members of the gospel music industry. Voting for the final winners will run August 26 through September 9.

With its big tent approach, the reach of TBN and increasingly improvements in production and entertainment value the Dove Awards could lay claim to the “The Grammys of Gospel” or “the biggest night in gospel music” tag as it becomes a more formidable competitor to its counterpart, the Stellar Awards.
