The newly released 2014 Corvette Stingray is turning heads, even with its controversial styling.
Now, be prepared for even more looks when the curtain is pulled off and the top goes down.
Unveiled at the recent Geneva Motor Show, the highly anticipated convertible had even critics doing a double-take.
Could it be, with the lid lopped off, the Vette looks… less controversial?
Without the quarter-windows and semi-tapered glass-back roof, the C7 ‘vert is even more slippery, and - dare I say - softer on the eyes.
It sure looks like the same Corvette that just wowed us only months prior. Only it seems lower, wider than ever before.
Taking out some of the sting in the ‘Ray’s styling is a fitting counter to the C7 critics (pun intended). Perhaps they still miss the 2009 Corvette Stingray Concept’s radical glass-back fastback. The retro ’63 split-window feature was nixed, an inevitable casualty in the production versus concept car process.
But make the top go down (improving its looks), and all is right in Chevy circles.
It’s amazing how fast the GM development team went from coupe to convertible, when usually automakers (especially Chevy) take years to release a new model (take note Dodge Challenger).
The last Stingray C3 (’68-’82) convertible was made in 1975, and the C7 is a big fan of those curvaceous design cues. Chevy clearly enjoys returning to its past and re-imaging the Stingray name (did sexy ever go away?).
Adding a convertible to the decidedly American sports car is akin to saying “next” to its world-class competition.
