Thanks to Mother Nature and some perfectly-timed rain showers at Daytona International Speedway, this weekend’s races will both feature some surprises at the front of the pack. Rookie Dakoda Armstrong starts on pole for Friday night’s Nationwide Series Subway Firecracker 250, while David Gilliland starts on pole for Saturday night’s Coke Zero 400 Sprint Cup Series race. Both series were able to get the first round of qualifying completed, but the second and third rounds were called off due to showers.

Armstrong took the Nationwide Series pole with a speed of 192.123 mph (46.845 seconds); Trevor Bayne starts on the outside pole after his fastest lap of 191.995 mph (46.886 seconds). Chris Buescher and Ryan Reed continue the Ford Mustang domination in Row Two, while Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota Camry drivers Kyle Busch and Elliott Sadler make up Row Three. JR Motorsports’ Chase Elliott and Regan Smith start from the fourth row, while Darrell Wallace Jr. and Kyle Larson round out the top 10.

Gilliland took the Cup Series pole with a speed of 199.322 mph (45.153 seconds), and starts next to another surprising driver – Reed Sorenson, on the outside pole after a lap of 199.221 mph (45.176 seconds). More surprises on Row Two, as Landon Cassill and Bobby Labonte put together solid qualifying efforts. Jimmie Johnson and Matt Kenseth make up Row Three, with Dale Earnhardt Jr. and David Ragan on Row Four. Jeff Gordon and Greg Biffle round out the top 10.

The Nationwide Series Subway Firecracker 250 goes green Friday night at 7:30 p.m. ET. The Cup Series Coke Zero 400 goes green Saturday at 7:30 p.m. ET. Keep up with the action at www.nascar.com.
