Examining the field: There will be no potential fourpeat for DeLaSalle this year since their reign came to an end in the section finals by the top seeded Park Center Pirates. They are a young team led by senior Cayla McMorris and they are also making their first trip to state, The Pirates have been No. 2 in Class AAA behind Fergus Falls and they face the Simley Spartans, who beat the top seeded New Prague Trojans in the Section 4 final.
The second game pits the fifth seeded Monticello Magic and the fourth seeded Minneapolis Washburn Millers. Both teams are back in the tournament, though the Millers moved up from Class AA to Class AAA They have an outstanding shot blocker in 6'2" Chase Coley, who will be playing for Iowa next season. Washburn could be tough for Monticello if they play solid defense.
The following morning at Mariucci Arena, the Kasson-Mantorville KoMets have a really tough task ahead in the second seeded Fergus Falls Otters. The Otters have been the state's top ranked AAA team, returning all but three players from last year's team that lost in double overtime to Monticello in the quarterfinals. They came out of a tough Section 8, which had top teams such as Albany and Thief River Falls but can they prove themselves against tougher opponents?
The Class AAA session wraps up with the Chisago Lakes Wildcats and the third seeded Marshall Tigers. The Tigers are in their eighth trip to state and go up against the Wildcats 6'5" center Bryanna Fernstrom, who will be headed down I-35 next season to play at Iowa State. Can Chisago Lakes advance to their first semifinal game behind Fernstrom?
