2014 Class AA girls basketball section preview

Class AA section play is already underway. Here's who's left standing in the eight sections.

In Section 1, the unbeaten Chatfield Gophers are the top seed in the East Subsection with the second seeded Plainview-Elgin-Millville Bulldogs on their heels. There are three outstanding teams remaining ins the West Subsection. The top seeded Kenyon-Wanamingo Knights, the second seeded Hayfield Vikings and the third seeded Dover-Eyota Eagles. Fifth seeded Pine Island hopes to play giant killer against the Knights.

You'll need only five letters to describe Section 2 and they are NRHEG. New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva is the defending state champion and is led by Golden Gopher signee Carlie Wagner. They have been the state's top AA team since the start of the season will be tough to beat. Look out for the Norwood-Young America Raiders and the Jordan Jaguars on the other side of the bracket.

Tracy-Milroy-Balaton and Fairmont are the two top seeds in Section 3. The Montevideo Thunder Hawks are on a roll with six straight wins. The Martin County West Mavericks got off to a hot start before closing out the regular season 4-3.

In Section 4, it's a wide open race for a trip to Target Center as three Tri-Metro Conference schools occupy the top three seeds. The top seeded St. Croix Lutheran Crusaders, the second seeded Concordia Academy-Roseville Beacons and the third seeded Minnehaha Academy Redhawks. The Crusaders are on fire with 15 straight wins. If they stay hot, they can pick up the section championship trophy.

The Annandale Cardinals and Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted lakers are the top seeds in Section 5. but look out for the Braham Bombers. Moving from section 7 to five, the Bombers are in the beginning of the post Rebekah Dahlman era and have a great shot to return to state. They won 12 of their last 15 games and could keep the road to state from going through Wright County.

There's plenty of talent in Section 6 and it could be the toughest of the Class AA sections with the Staples Motley Cardinals and the New London-Spicer Wildcats the top seeds. Look out for the Osakis Silverstreaks, the Sauk Centre Mainstreeters and the Holdingford Huskers. This section looks good folks. Who will board the buses to Minneapolis?

Up north in Section 7, the Esko Eskomos and the International Falls Broncos are the top seeds. it's been 24 years since the Broncos have been to state and it could be ahot time in "The Nation's Icebox" if they emerge with a section title.

In Section 8, the Pequot Lakes Patriots and the Hawley Nuggets occupy the top seeds. The Nuggets have struck gold going into section play with a 12 game winning e. Look out for the Breckenridge Cowboys and the Pelican Rapids Vikings.

Next up is Class A
