After two classes of large schools, it's time to examine the eight Class AA sections. Since section play began early due to the large number of teams, here's "Who's Left Standing?"
In Section 1, two perennial powers remain in the East Subsection, the top seeded Caledonia Warriors and the Plainview-Elgin-Millville Bulldogs. The defending champion Byron Bears and the Hayfield Vikings are the top two teams remaining in the West subsection.
Looking at Section 2, the two top seeds left are the Mayer Lutheran Crusaders and the Waseca Bluejays.
Over in Section 3, it could be a "Battle of the Cardinals if the two top seeds Redwood Valley and Fairmont face each other. The Minneota Vikings and the St. James Saints are two other teams that hope to spoil the All Cardinal showdown.
A pair of Tri-Metro Conference schools are the top two seeds in Section 4. The Minnehaha Academy Redhawks and the St. Paul Academy Spartans. Also in contention are the third seeded New Life Academy Eagles and the fourth seeded Concordia Academy-Roseville Beacons. Any of these teams could win it. It's a wide open section.
The St. Cloud Cathedral Crusaders and the Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted lakers are the top two seeds in Section 5. It could be a big year in the Granite city if both Tech and Cathedral advance to state. The Annandale Cardinals and the Braham Bombers are also in the hunt.
In section 6, the top two seeds are two schools whose girls teams have had plenty of success, the Sauk Centre Mainstreeters and the New London-Spicer Wildcats. Can Adam Essler, who ran for four touchdowns in the high scoring Class AAA football final lead the wildcats to a trip down Highway 55 toward Target Center?
The Virginia Blue Devils and the Esko Eskomos have the two top seeds in Section 7. The Eskomos are the top ranked team in Class AA and have won nine straight games. Look out for the Barnum Bombers. They have lost only one game since they lost to Esko on December 6 and their could be a rematch in sections.
A couple of familiar northern powers are the top seeds in Section 8. The Crosby-Ironton Rangers and the Perham Yellowjackets are the two top subsection seeds. The Rangers are red hot, winning 12 in a row.
The Class A section preview is next.
