The final part of this year's girls basketball preview examines the eight Class A sections.
Starting with Section 1. In the East Subsection, can the top seeded Rushford-Peterson Trojans follow the success of Tom Vix's boys program and earn a state tournament berth? The second seeded Spring Grove Lions could end their hopes. In the West subsection, the Goodhue Wildcats are the top seed but look out for the second seeded Lyle/Austin Pacelli Athletics. They are unbeaten and have not been to the state tournament since Pacelli was nicknamed the Shamrocks back in 1981. This section should be interesting.
Over in Section 2, the top seeds are the Mankato Loyola Crusaders and the Minnesota Valley Lutheran Chargers. The Crusaders are on a roll with a 12 game winning streak. The Sleepy Eye Indians have awakened and are riding a six game win streak.
The defending state champion Minneota Vikings are the top seed in Section 3. But look out for the Canby Lancers, Dawson-Boyd Blackjacks and Wabasso Rabbits. Can Chad Johnston lead the Vikings to another trip to Williams Arena? It may be a tough road for the defending champs.
Section 4's top seed is the Maranatha Christian Academy Mustangs. The defending section champions have gone 18-2 since starting the season 2-3. Look out for the second seeded Christ's Household of Faith Lions, led by veteran head coach Vernon Harms.
The Isle Huskies and the Browerville Tigers are the top seeds in Section 5. The Verndale Pirates could make the Tigers walk the plank since they have won eight in a row. Verndale has been known for outstanding nine man football teams under Mike Mahlen. Can they be known for success in girls basketball?
In Section 6, the Ada Borup Cougars and the West Central Area Knights occupy the top seeds. The Cougars only loss this season was to Win-E-Mac. There could be a bus full of Cougar fans looking forward to hear their unique pep band if they return to Minneapolis.
Heading to Section 7 where the top two seeds are the Mountain Iron-Buhl Rangers and the McGregor Mercuries. The Rangers only two losses this season were to Maranatha and NRHEG. They have a great shot at returning to state nut can they hold off the hot North Woods Grizzlies, winners of 10 in a row?
The final section to be examined is Section 8. A couple of hot team are the top two seeds in the West Subsection, the Win-E-Mac Patriots and the Sacred Heart Eagles from East Grand Forks. In the East subsection, the Red Lake Warriors are the top seed followed by the second seeded Walker-Hackensack-Akeley Wolves.
There's plenty of excellent basketball coming up on the
