Automotive News reported earlier today (Aug. 26,2013) that three separate sources within General Motors have confirmed the addition of a four cylinder Duramax turbodiesel option for the newest generation of the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon.
The new Turbo Diesel is rumored to be the same one currently powering the Chevrolet Colorado in overseas markets with 2.5 and 2.8 liter offerings. Chevrolet is doubling down on their commitment to stay competitive in the race for fuel efficiency dominance in the midsize and fullsize truck market. They are also betting on the fact that the redesigns of the Colorado/Canyon duo will bring in a new segment of buyers once absent before.
The 2.5 and 2.8L turbo-diesel’s currently feature a variable-geometry turbocharger for optimal power and efficiency across the rpm band and a balance shaft for greater smoothness. Each is designed to deliver durable performance, while a number of long-life engine components help reduce the frequency of maintenance.
The 2.8L turbo-diesel is rated at 180 horsepower and 346 lb.-ft. of torque with an available six-speed automatic transmission. The 2.5L is rated at 150 horsepower and 258 lb.-ft. of torque
The impressive torque numbers make the turbo diesel a very enticing option and would see some success here in the United States once they hit the market.
With a broad torque band to suit the needs of any mid size truck owner and the turbo charger providing a smooth delivery of horsepower, the Duramax turbo diesel will put the Colorado as a sport truck competitor as well as GMC’s promise of professional grade.
