NHRA Funny Car driver Alexis DeJoria won her first Wally Sunday at Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park, home of the CARQUEST Auto Parts NHRA Nationals. Antron Brown (Top Fuel) and Allen Johnson ( Pro Stock) also took home Wallys from the Chandler, Arizona track.
DeJoria, who kicked off the season by becoming the first woman to break the four-second barrier at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona during qualifying for the NHRA Winternationals, took round wins over Jeff Arend, her Kalitta Motorsports teammate Del Worsham and 2013 Funny Car champ John Force to the final round, where she faced another John Force Racing driver, Robert Hight. DeJoria was the No. 4 qualifier for the event.
Brown, the No. 5 qualifier in Top Fuel, defeated Richie Crampton, Shawn Langdon and Doug Kalitta on his way to the final round, where he faced Brittany Force, racing in the first final of her career. Force took round wins against David Grubnic, Tony Schumacher and Steve Torrence on her way to the finals.
Johnson defeated two KB Racing drivers, Jimmy Alund (subbing for Greg Anderson) and Jason Line, then Dave Connolly on his way to the finals, where he beat V. Gaines. The 2012 Pro Stock champ qualified No. 6 in the Pro Stock category.
The 2014 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series schedule continues with race No. 3, the Amalie Motor Oil NHRA Gatornationals at Auto Plus Raceway at Gainesville in Florida, Thursday through Sunday, March 13th through 16th. Keep up with the action at www.nhra.com.
