2014 BAFTA Awards: 'Gravity' Wins 6, but '12 Years A Slave' Earns Best Film

The last big awards ceremony before the Academy Awards, the BAFTAs have been an increasingly reliable indicator of how the Oscars will turn out. If that holds true this year then Alfonso Cuaron's Gravity is in line to take a lot of golden statues in a couple of weeks. The sci-fi thriller was the big winner of the night, taking six awards including Best British Film (a controversial nomination, to say the least), Best Director, Best Cinematography, and most of the technical awards. Steve McQueen's 12 Years A Slave won Best Film, while Chiwetel Ejiofor took home Best Actor.

Meanwhile, in what may be a sign of things to come, Jennifer Lawrence's performance in American Hustle beat out Lupita Nyong'o for Best Supporting Actress. Captain Phillips' Barkhad Abdi won Best Supporting Actor, and Cate Blanchett, the clear favorite in the Best Actress category, won for Blue Jasmine.
