On Tuesday the AVN Media Network announced it has opened the pre-nomination process for the 31st annual AVN Awards Show, including two new awards categories for Best Safe Sex Scene and Best Condom Manufacturer. The AVN Awards Show – colloquially known as the "Oscars of Porn" – also includes categories for adult pleasure products, adult retail and distribution, adult films, and adult web & technology. This year's awards will recognize films and products released between October 1, 2012 and October 7, 2013.
“Many will notice that we pushed back the traditional street date deadline for eligibility this year,” AVN senior editor Peter Warren said, in a statement released on Tuesday at Business.AVN.com. “We decided to do this in order to accommodate producers whose release schedules were thrown off by the recently imposed industry-wide production halts. We feel this will be a benefit to many who have been set back by the current events impacting the industry."
That's a reference to the moratorium on adult film sets after three performers tested HIV positive in recent months; each of the patients were determined to have been infected by off-set partners, according to the Free Speech Coalition, an adult industry trade group. The moratorium will be lifted this week on September 20, according to a statement released on Monday by FSC CEO Diane Duke.
In light of those events, AVN has also decided to add two new categories for the 2014 AVN Awards: Best Safe Sex Scene and Best Condom Manufacturer.
“As a show of support for those promoting safe sex practices, we thought it would be not only fitting but important to add these categories,” Warren explained. “While we continue to stand opposed to governmental interference with the product this industry manufactures, we also feel that those whose products encourage safe sex in interesting and innovative ways deserve to be commended.”
In April AVN Media Network announced that adult film stars Chanel Preston and Samantha Saint will co-host this year's awards ceremony.
