2014 Academy Awards: Best Supporting Actress Oscar goes to Lupita Nyong’o

Actress Lupita Nyong’o’s life is a little more golden tonight. The “12 Years a Slave” star won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress at the 86th Academy Awards Sunday night at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood.

In accepting the golden statue she thanked the Academy, her co-stars and saluted her character in the film Patsey. She went on to thank director Steve McQueen for giving her the oportunity.

Nyong’o who can currently be seen in the No.1 movie in the country “Non-Stop” beat out Sally Hawkins (“Blue Jasmine”), Jennifer Lawrence (“American Hustle”), Julia Roberts (“August: Osage County”) and June Squibb (“Nebraska”). Her film “12 Years a Slave” is up for a total of 9 awards including Best Picture and Best Director for McQueen.

Jared Leto won the program’s first award taking home the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for the “Dallas Buyers Club”. Both Nyong’o and Leto are fresh off wins at the 2014 Film Independent Spirit Awards held on Saturday night in Santa Monica, California. Other wins of note so far include “20 Feet From Stardom” for Best Documentary Feature.

The 86th Annual Academy Awards ceremony is being broadcast on ABC with host Ellen DeGeneres.
