2014 Academy Awards: ’12 Years a Slave’ wins Best Picture Oscar

“12 Years a Slave” took home the top prize at Sunday night’s 86th Academy Awards at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood winning for Best Picture. The film's cast and crew enthusiatically appeared on stage with director Steve McQueen and producer Brad Pitt.

McQueen thanked Pitt for helping to get the movie made. “12 Years a Slave” was up for a total of 9 awards at the 2014 Oscars. The movie’s breakout star Lupita Nyong’o netted a win for Best Supporting Actress while writer John Ridley won for Best Adapted Screenplay.

The drama was based on the remarkable story of Solomon Northup a free man who was kidnapped into slavery for a dozen years.

Others winners during the telecast were Cate Blanchett (“Blue Jasmine”) for Best Actress, Jared Leto (“Dallas Buyers Club”) for Best Supporting Actor and the Best Actor Oscar went to Matthew McConaughey (“Dallas Buyers Club”).

The 2014 Oscars ceremony was hosted by Ellen DeGeneres and aired on ABC.
