Joe Gibbs Racing driver Elliott Sadler, who started on the outside pole, held off the masses in the final laps of the Aaron’s 312 at Talladega Superspeedway on Saturday, his first win of the season and first at the 2.66-mile superspeedway. Chris Buescher finished second, followed by Regan Smith in third.
Sadler, in the No. 11 OneMain Financial Toyota Camry, led nine times for a race-high 40 laps and moved into second-place in the points standings, one point behind Chase Elliott and two points ahead of Smith.
Sam Hornish Jr., in his first race in the No. 54 Monster Energy Toyota for JGR, finished fifth after winning the pole on Friday. Darrell Wallace Jr., making his first start of the season in the No. 20 ToyotaCare Toyota from the third position, finished 31st after getting caught up in an early-race wreck.
The Nationwide Series is off until Sunday, May 18th, when racing goes green at Iowa Speedway.
Kyle Busch will start 19th in the Aaron’s 499 on Sunday at Talladega in the No. 18 M&Ms Pretzel Toyota Camry. Busch put down a lap of 193.541 mph (49.478 seconds) in the second round of knock-out qualifying on Saturday.
Matt Kenseth starts 21st in the No. 20 Dollar General Toyota after his lap of 193.458 mph (49.499 seconds) in round two of knock-out qualifying, while Denny Hamlin, in the No. 11 FedEx Express Toyota, will start 34th after his first-round lap of 197.378 mph (48.516 seconds).
