2014 5-Hour Energy 400: Kenseth in 10th leads JGR at Kansas

Joe Gibbs Racing driver Matt Kenseth led the three-car team with a 10th place finish in the 5-Hour Energy 400 at Kansas Speedway Saturday night. Kenseth’s JGR teammates Kyle Busch and Denny Hamlin earned top 20 finishes at the 1.5-mile track.

Kenseth started 28th in the No. 20 Dollar General Toyota Camry, but got stuck a lap down by Lap 48 as the caution flags failed to fall his way. He finally got the “Lucky Dog” on Lap 181 and began his crawl toward the top 10, going on to lead a lap when late-race pit stops began to cycle through. Kenseth remains second in points.

Busch, who won the Camping World Truck Series race on Friday night for his own Kyle Busch Motorsports team, started 20th in the No. 18 Snickers Toyota and moved slowly into the top 10 before a pit road speeding penalty put him at the end of the lead-lap cars for a Lap 118 restart. Busch went down a lap but got the “Lucky Dog” on a Lap 151 caution. Following late-race pit stops, Busch cycled through to the 15th position, where he finished the race. Busch sits third in points.

Hamlin, who started 30th his No. 11 FedEx Freight Toyota, went a lap down early on but also got a “Lucky Dog” to get back on the lead lap. Handling issues caused Hamlin to spin on Lap 71, bringing out a caution; he managed to remain on the lead lap in spite of the spin. Hamlin ran as high as third after a two-tire stop mid-race, but drivers with fresher tires moved right past him. Following late-race pit stops, Hamlin finished the race 18th. Hamlin sits 12th in points, but currently has a Chase spot secured thanks to his win at Talladega.

All three JGR drivers will complete in this weekend’s Sprint All-Star Race at Charlotte Motor Speedway on Saturday, May 17th. Keep up with the action at joegibbsracing.com.
