The snow is finally melting and spring is starting to tease us, being ever so close. Those making the best of the thaw and hoping to add to your weekend excitement, look no further. The Donnie Smith Bike and Car Show offers the perfect escape.
Set inside the St. Paul River Centre, the 27th Annual Donnie Smith Show was booming with attendance. It was good to see a great turnout, as the show-floor had plenty to offer. Also noticeable was the heavy influx of local cycle clubs, along with a good mix of families bringing their youngsters into the fold. Might as well start them early.
Restored classics, projects, and ultra sano show bikes had the crowd applauding with snapshots from their camera phones and voting slips for their favorites. Aftermarket parts vendors, such as Dennis Kirk, reminded shoppers to think ahead to Riding Season. A large swap section of vintage and contemporary bike parts greeted spectators as well as hundreds of bikes sporting mile-deep paint and nifty mods. The whole scene was fueled by a sea of black leather, sexy tattoos and embroidered vests.
Though primarily inspired for more of the 2-wheeling fan, the second floor had some pretty neat classic cars, a first ever for this car show. Sponsored by Route 65 Classics (http://route65classics.com/) of Ham Lake, MN, the Roy Wilkins Auditorium housed a cool collection of rumblers to satisfy that horsepower fix.
If you’re a true rider, be it on 2- or 4-wheels, the Donnie Smith Show should be your first destination of 2014.
