2013 Writing the Rockies Conference promises valuable information for writers

The 2013 Writing the Rockies Conference, hosted by Western State College, is just around the corner and the 2013 line up of talent is something to get excited about. As in years past, there will be workshop and panel offerings by experts in their field in four main concentrations of interest: genre fiction and nonfiction, screenwriting, poetry and publishing. Evening readings will be featured with a cash bar available. Panel moderators and conference organizers Larry Merideth and Mark Todd have outdone themselves this year arranging a conference beneficial in boosting writing careers of all levels an concentrations.
Scheduled Keynote Speakers will focus on individual concentrations. Award winning author W.C. Jameson, (Treasure Hunter: Caches, Curses, and Deadly Confrontations) will address “Strategies for launching a Successful Series”. Executive Producer and television writer Charlie Craig (Fox’s X-Files, ABC’s Invasion, ABC Family’s Pretty Little Liars) will share tips and tricks to dealing with the pleasures and perils of a screenwriter’s life. Poet and critic Jan Schreiber (Digressions, Wily Apparitions, Bell Buoys) will talk about language in poetry. Senior Editor and Subsidiary Rights Director for Baen Books, leading U. S. independent science fiction publisher, James Minz will discuss trends in the e-publishing industry.
Presenters in genre fiction and nonfiction arenas feature successful writers and authors including journalist and magazine publisher Mavis Bennett (The Monitor Magazine); talented fiction and nonfiction author Barbara Chepaitis (Jaguar Addams series, Feeding Christine, Saving Eagle Mitch); best-selling author and editor Russell Davis (The End of All Seasons); children’s author Stasia Deutsch (Blast to the Past); and award winning novelist Michaela Roessner (Walkabout Woman). The conference will also feature experienced screenwriters including Associate Professor at Western State and film producer Jack Lucido; Hollywood screenwriter J.S. Mayank; Crested Butte’s Mark Schwiesow; Hollywood development executive Tria Cartwright; and Technical Director of Media at Western State an film producer Torrence Maurer. Author, publisher and owner of Raspberry Creek Books, Ltd. Larry Merideth will offer insight into the publishing industry.
In the poetry arena Writing the Rockies offers a full scale poetry symposium presented by David J. Rothman with five individual collections published and numerous works in acclaimed journals and Executive Editor of The New Criterion David Yezzi, featuring renowned poets an critics including the director of West Chester University Poetry Center and Poetry Conference, Kim Bridgford; Assosiate Professor of English at SUNY Fredonia, Natalie Gerber; Gorley Putt Professor of Poetry and Poetics at the University of Cambridge, Simon Jarvis, Poet Laureate of Wisconsin, Marilynn L. Taylor; and published author and poet Frederick Turner.
Of course it wouldn’t be a writing conference if there weren’t opportunities for pitch sessions and reading critiques with the talented panelists and professional agents and editors including Leah Rogin-Roper of Fast Forward Press, Caleb J. Seeling of Samizdat Creative, poet, blogger an marketing specialist Sam Smith, Blood Lotus Fiction Editor John Steele, Terrie Wolf of AKA Literary Agency, and Andrew Zack of The Zack Company.
Hosted by Western State College, the conference will be held Thursday, July 25 through Saturday, July 27 with optional break-out sessions on the Sunday morning. The experience and expertise offered will have to compete with the beautiful Colorado mountain scenery of the Gunnison Valley. 2013 Writing the Rockies is one conference series writers won’t want to miss.
