2013 WMMA Press Committee Awards announced

According to a Dec. 24 tweet from Wombat Sports, Larissa Pacheco vs. Irene Aldana has been added for "Fight of the Year" and Aspen Ladd is now on the ballot for "Amateur Fighter of the Year" in the 2013 WMMA Press Association Awards.

The WMMA Press Association Awards is divided into over a dozen categories, with topics ranging from "Fighter of the Year" to "Promotion of the Year."

Other categories include "Knockout of the Year" and "Submission of the Year," along with awards to honor the amateur fighter of the year and best sponsor.

By all accounts, the purpose of the WMMA Press Association Awards is to honor exceptional performance in various aspects of women's MMA.

Unfortunately, the association includes fewer than a dozen of the hundreds of qualified media members that consistently cover women's MMA.

Included in the committee are the following: MMA Rising's Robert Sargent, Gina Begley of ProWMMA Now!, Katrina Belcher from TheUltimateFemaleFighter.com, Jason Adams of Promoting Real Women, Tim Peterson of Women's MMA Today, Sherdog.com freelance writer Yael Grauer, WMMA Roundup's Kristin Ursy and Marq Piocos of Wombat Sports.

Notable media members who were excluded include: Examiner.com's Eric Holden, Alchemist Radio's Mitch Ciccarelli, MMA Jam's Stacey Lynn, Ultimate MMA editor Bre Armstrong, SportsGeeks' Frank Ramirez, That MMA Show's Jeremy Johnson, Cage Side Submissions' Steve Rychel and Women's MMA Discussion group founder Arron Pegson.

With so many talented WMMA journalists left out of the WMMA Press Association, some media members began to question the legitimacy of the group.

Wombat Sports writer and committee head Marq Piocos took to social media to explain why certain media didn't qualify to be a part of the association.

"A committee member nominates someone they feel has covered the sport exceptionally," Piocos said. "The people with the exception of Eric that were named covers MMA in general and lack continuous coverage of WMMA outside the major promotions. Eric doesn't cover news at all, he simply is a blogger who uses his site to try to gain attention for himself and not better the sport as a whole."

Due to the exclusive nature of the WMMA Press Association, those who were left off it got together to form their own committee.

This newly-formed WMMA Press Committee is a gathering of journalists, radio hosts, reporters and community activists in the realm of female fighting.

It is open to all members of the press who cover women's MMA.

The WMMAPC has decided to put together an awards presentation of their own to honor exceptional performances within the realm of women's MMA.
