The WFTDA released the most comprehensively revised rule set in several years on November 19th, 2012. The new rules set officially went into effect New Years Day 2013. All WFTDA sanctioned games must be played under this rules set. Roller derby leagues that are a full member of the WFTDA play games sanctioned by the association to be considered for regional and national rankings as well as potential tournament invitations. Since 2006, the rules have been modified with additions, deletions, and alterations regarding various form of play for the sport of roller derby. The rules have generally undergone these modifications at least once a year, usually more. With the release of the most recent rules set, some long standing practices have been discarded such as the deletion of minor penalties. The prior rules set called for a skater that had accumulated four minor penalties to be sent to the penalty box for at least one minute. Another significant change is the deletion of separate whistle blows at the beginning of a jam. One whistle blow indicated when the pack could start rolling, and then two more when the jammers could begin. The new rules set calls for one whistle blow to start both the pack and the jammers rolling simultaneously. The most recently released rules set indicates the constant evolution of the sport of roller derby. The complete and updated rules set can be viewed at: http://wftda.com/rules
