2013 Washington roller derby all-star team: Referee

Really, it shouldn't be much of a surprise that Rawk has won this award for the second year in a row and, once again, by a pretty wide margin. I mean the dude does it all; WFTDA is his forte, but he also refs banked track and USARS, too. The guy is a roller derby rules encyclopedia, thesaurus and dictionary all rolled into one. He's also awesome in that if I ever have a question about a certain rule or situation involving a rule, I can ask him and he will send me a nice, clear, easy to understand answer. And that's always appreciated more that you could know.

He also holds the distinction of being the only player in our fantasy hockey league to ever defeat my team in penalty minutes during a week. I'm thinking that in order to make sure that doesn't happen again, I'll have to load-up on goons before we meet again. That 3 year streak was my pride and joy. I now shake a friendly fist in his direction saying "wait until next time."

Still, he's not only the best around here, but around the entire roller derby world. And Washington is incredibly lucky to have him reffing our bouts.

"Rawk is such a well-rounded an experienced ref, but my favorite thing about working with rawk is that he is always hungry to keep learning more. If one could walk into a ref room after a given bout, chances are rawk is tawking over any unique or problematic scenarios, or reffing successes, with his crew down to extreme detail and nuance. As an NSO I am privileged to observe an take part in some of these conversations, and I always learn from them myself. He fosters a great crew mentality, and does a great job of delivering honest feedback to officials in a constructive way. What can you say that hasn't been said...he's a ref I would want in any bout that I'm coaching or officiating." - Thurston Gore

You can also follow me on Twitter. And, odds are, I'll follow you back. I do pretty much everything on there; roller derby, football, hockey, baseball, soccer, basketball and all sorts of other mindless nonsense. Twitter is one of the great wastelands in the world and I enjoy taking advantage of that fact every once in a while.
