Carmen has made this list every single year it's been in existence. But in 2013, she has won the MVP award for the first time. Most skaters get the majority of their votes from their own teams and leagues or those who are close around them. Carmen, however, grabs votes from just about every corner of the state along with votes from outside of Washington. And as I watch this unfold while opening email after email, I've come to the conclusion that Carmen is the absolute epitome of what an "all-star" is - someone who is loved, admired and respected by people from all over. Here is what some of the voters had to say about her...
"Carmen is the consumate derby athlete. She is strong and reliable and eager to help everyone become better derby athletes." - Shelarious
"All around awesome skater and super involved in the sport of derby, from her clothing line to her workout video, Carmen is derby." - Beast Lighting
"Amazing youth work with I-5 and training work all around, proves that you can (almost?) make roller derby a full time job that provides a living." - Sir Hans
"Carmen has long been “old reliable” when it comes to power jamming - but this past season, Carmen has raised her game as an even stronger utility player by spending an increasing amount of time on the track as a blocker. She absolutely loves to work on improving her variety of blocking techniques and she loves to be put out there to block for her team; but she will put on that Star when she is called upon. Having watched the Team USA try-outs B&W scrimmage and witnessed that very high level of combined skating skill & derby skill on the track, I am convinced that Carmen’s selection to Team USA was her dual ability & drive to not only jam effectively but to block effectively with her teammates, controlling those dynamic walls so no one can penetrate.
(One more comment about Carmen. Carmen wants to improve in every facet of Roller Derby and the greatest thing about her is that, through her Getsome Ahtletics camps, she wants to help other skaters raise their game, so they too can become better Derby Athletes!)" - Mike Evans
"She is a great all around skater, with a great attitude. She is a fantastic derby ambassador who promotes derby on and off the track by being professional and an all around nice chick." - Calamity Jane
"The brains and brawn behind northwest roller derby, Carmen Getsome is the epitome of what all new skaters dream of being. Although I would have liked to see her jam more in the 2013 WFTDA Playoffs, when I was blessed with that viewing opportunity, I was once again pleased to see that she is the ultimate clutch player. Carmen Getsome is intelligent, consistent, and prepared to endure jam after jam in order to either bring her team back from a major point deficit or to secure a win with some insurance points. Not to mention, Carmen Getsome is a marketing genius with her ever-so popular Getsome Athletics brand of roller derby education and apparel. Her ability to teach, lead, and perform make her an authority on modern roller derby." - Crash Die't
"What more can possibly be said about Carmen Getsome that everyone reading this doesn’t already know? She isn’t just a northwest all-star; she is a global superstar." - Murray Grande
" What can I say... that's my kid out there. Mike and I keep looking at each other saying we made that? Wow...but the truth is, Carmen made herself what she's become. We always told our children they could do anything they wanted to, but they had to work at it. Anyone who knows Carmen knows she works at everything. Whether she's skating for Rat City, coaching around the globe for Getsome Athletics, creating a pant specifically for derby, coaching I-5, working her day job or creating another new business, she's working hard. As I've said before, she has an unusual ability to take movement and break it down into small steps and teach it in a way that everyone can learn. She also seems to have an insane ability at reading rules like her father reads instructions, and apply them to the track instantly. Carmen can keep track of everyone's penalties (on both teams at one time), know how much time is left on the clock and somehow manage some complicated play in the last seconds of a bout. Carmen was a little nervous when she went to her first Team USA practice in Milwaukee a couple weeks ago, but, as soon as she stepped onto the track the nerves disappeared and the true competitor she is emerged. When it was her time to lead the team in drills she confidently took charge and instructed the group and we could see she was doing what she had been training to do all these years. She was helping make derby the best sport in the world!" - Jenny Evans
"Carmen has derby smarts and she shares them with the world instead of keeping them all to herself. She even shares them with people like me, that really want to know about derby." – Afro Jamurai
