The Virginias are a little haven for up-and-coming derby. There are some teams that have been there a while, and some of them are finally making a splash in WFTDA. As I put these lists together it’s awesome to see girls voted on three years in a row. It’s also amazing to see others who I trained at the beginning of 2013 – where they have come since then is just awesome. So let's start meeting your top 20 skaters in West Virginia and Virginia.
These are your Reserves from the Virginias. They are the 17-20 slot on the ‘charter’ as voted by the fans. Congrats to everyone who has made the list!
MaLuvicent – Rocktown Rollers – ‘Luv at First Fright’ in a past derby life, MaLuvicent is infamous for her strong blocking and consistent point scoring. A vet of the Rocktown Rollers, she is a solid piece of their line-up who grows harder to contend with every season. She will be appearing on the Virginia All-Stars at the Battle of the All-Stars in PA next weekend. “She is unstoppable! She's a great skater and just slices through the pack when jamming. As a blocker she can just torture a jammer.” – Amelia McClure
Foxy Balbusta – Greenbrier Roller Vixens – In only her second year skating, Foxy has improved leaps and bounds since I first met her in February. Her derby instincts are solid and she has a knack for finding the small holes of a wall to exploit. Despite an injury taking her out for part of the season, her skills have honed quickly as she has taken on a leadership role on the floor. Her fast feet have earned her a spot on the West Virginia All-Star team.
Rude McSlamahan – Chemical Valley Rollergirls – Blocker and jammer for Chemical Valley, Rude has gotten close to breaking the list in the past but this is the first year she has made the top 20. Her powerful hits (see gallery for one such example) and footwork make her a frightening blocker to jam against and an intimidating jammer to block against. Her fans love her – I have gotten many notes over the last two years with simple notes attached to her name such as “Just amazing” and “Hate being hit by her”. Sometimes that says it all.
Bam Bam Brawler – Charlottesville Derby Dames/Rocktown Rollers – Here she is. This is year #3 for her on the list, and she is a perpetual Derby Crush of mine. Bam Bam started the year in Rocktown and made a mid-season switch to Charlottesville. The big change this year was we saw Bam Bam blocking more, and seeing her take out opponents is just as beautiful as watching her hop around them. Bam Bam showed off her MADE skills this year as a crucial pivot for Team Rogue at the Derby Ink Invitational. It’s no surprise that she’s on the Virginia All-Star team with her smarts, reflexes and overall derby-awesome.
