Let's take a moment and celebrate those that, without them, this sport would not be possible. These individuals donate large amounts of their time and rarely get recognition. It was amazing to see all the volunteers and officials nominated, and it was an extremely close vote in all of the categories, but in the end, these are those who were voted as best in their field for 2013.
Silence of the Jams, Junction City Roller Dolls
"He's at almost every practice and critiques us whenever he can (which is very helpful). He goes on the road with us pretty much every time and works really hard for our league and officials." ~ Roll-X
"Has improved by leaps and bounds, always participating in all-things Utah Derby and beyond the state's boundaries." ~ Julie Young
2013 Utah Roller Derby All-Star: Non-Skating Official
Bruce Clegg, Wasatch Roller Derby
"Bruce is just Awesome." ~ Chris Bojanower
"Bruce is a staple in Utah Roller Derby. He is dedicated to the sport and shows up with a great attitude and a smile." ~ Vulgar Vixen
2013 Utah Roller Derby All-Star: Coach
Effn, Wasatch Roller Derby
"Eff'n is super passionate about derby and it shows in his dedication and knowledge of the game. Coaching a bunch of derby ladies is tough work and he is great at keeping things on track and everyone in line. He is a great coach." ~ Vulgar Vixen
2013 Wyoming Roller Derby All-Star: Skating Official
EZ Judge It, Powder River Rousta Bout It Betties
"His devotion to keeping the game fair and skaters honest is second to none. He has made amazing strides in the time he has been officiating. I'm excited to see him develop more." ~ Anon
2013 Wyoming Roller Derby All-Star: Non-Skating Official
Shake 'N Break, Naughty Pines Derby Dames
"As the head NSO of the Naughty Pines Derby Dames she honed her skills to excellence. Now that she has started to travel she has sharpened these skills further and shares the wealth of knowledge she has with the whole state. Shake is the go-to lady for any Wyoming NSO's who thirst for NSO expertise." ~ Anon
"She researches the rules, learns from the best, catalogs all of the statistics, keeps all of the scrimmage gear needed in her car, and works on the Rules and Regulations board. She's going to be the Head NSO for the WyoRDC, and she was chosen because she's the best in the state, no questions asked. Where other head NSOs fill the position because there are no other people interested, she does it because of her love for the game, something I think should be greatly admired." ~ Debbie Mercury
2013 Wyoming Roller Derby All-Star: Coach
Russian Poolboy, Cheyenne Capidolls
"At first, I had reservations about having a non-skating coach, but coaching is a completely different animal than doing. Pool Boy knows this game inside and out. He understands the strategy and is able to see with amazing clarity what is happening on the track during play. Most players have to play for at least a year or two to be able to make sense of what is happening on the track in all of it's intricacies. He not only can make sense of what is happening, he is able to dissect each play, analyze it, and teach our players in practice how to defend against and perfect our own strategies. He is encouraging and supporting, but doesn't mince words. He tells you what you are doing wrong, and then he tells you how to fix it." ~ Charmaniac
"It's impossible to overstate his awesomeness, he gives the most amazing inspirational speeches and got me to do things I never imagined possible just with positive feedback, know-how and vicarious passion." ~ Dangerex
If you see these folks on or off the track, thank them for their service to this wonderful sport, and heck, buy them an ale for their dedication and perseverance that was noticed by the skaters and their peers and earned them the honor of being a 2013 Utah Roller Derby All Star or 2013 Wyoming Roller Derby All Star.
