It comes as a bit of a surprise that 2013 US Open oddsmakers list Schiavone as such a huge underdog tonight considering Williams' struggles as of late.
Nevertheless, tennis betting experts list the unseeded Italian as a 20/1 [+2000] dog versus the defending champ, who's a 1/50 [-5000] landslide-favorite in their eighth head-to-head meeting.
While Serena holds a 5-2 advantage in the series, Schiavone could present some problems for the top-seeded American before she finds her groove.
As we saw last week in Cincinnati, the 16-time Grand Slam champ has struggled to find her game, which certainly makes her vulnerable in the opening stages of the 2013 US Open.
It's going to be interesting to see if Schiavone can catch Williams napping, and capitalize on the opportunities that are sure to present themselves in the early going.
On the other hand, throughout her career, Williams has been highly criticized for not giving her all in non-major events.
Furthermore, no one can question that fact that the world's No. 1 always comes ready to plat at Flushing Meadows, where she has hoisted the US Open Trophy four times.
