It may not be as star-studded as the American Music Awards or the BET Music Awards; however, it does have a following in the urban community. Moreover, if you are of a different generation you may not have ever heard of it.
It was billed as the "Sexiest Event of the Year", the 2013 Urban Model Awards, (UMA). This 4th annual urban model award show was held Saturday night at Club Aqua. This year the UMA's returned to Washington, DC. VH1 Former Reality Star Autumn Joi served as hostess.
According to its press release, the UMA’s sets out to honor and highlight urban models and others in the industry.
Mr. Jay Walker, co-founder for the UMA’s and CEO/Publisher of DimePiece magazine, says this award show is designed to “give back” and to show “appreciation” to the young ladies who are working hard in the evolving urban video and magazine industry.
The categories for the awards show was not only for young urban models, but also included magazines, photographers, and make-up artists.
He’s working to present a positive image for the urban modeling industry.
This year the UMA’s featured R&B singer Chris Bivens from the DMV (Hanover County, MD). This rising singer has been mentored by the artist Nelly on the show “The Next.” Chris says appearing at the UMA’s was a great opportunity for him to showcase his talent supported by his family.
Another rising star/artist in the urban model industry is photographer Jonathan “PhotoJ” Gentil. “PhotoJ” is a first-time UMA nominee and feels this is a big event in the urban model industry.
He feels the industry is a melting pot of talent and art. “PhotoJ” says “photography is art and art is photography”.
"PhotoJ" believes as a photographer in the industry he is "blessed" and can only "progress" and get better.
