Joe Gibbs Racing driver Kyle Busch took the pole on Friday for the Food City 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway with a new track record of 129.535 mph (14.813 seconds). It’s his first Sprint Cup Series pole at the 0.533-mile track in Tennessee, where he has 12 wins across NASCAR’s top three series.
Kasey Kahne will start on the outside pole on Sunday following his fast lap of 128.995 mph (14.875 seconds). Starting behind Busch will be his JGR teammate Denny Hamlin, whose lap of 128.960 mph (14.879 seconds) was good enough for third; Brian Vickers, driving in the Cup Series for Michael Waltrip Racing this weekend, starts fourth following his lap of 128.528 mph (14.929 seconds).
Paul Menard, Jamie McMurray, Brad Keselowski, Tony Stewart, Martin Truex Jr. and Joey Logano round out the top 10 in qualifying.
In the season’s rookie battle, Ricky Stenhouse Jr. qualified 28th but will have to start at the back of the pack following an engine change. Danica Patrick qualified 41st on owner’s points.
The Nationwide Series qualifies and races on Saturday, March 16th. The Sprint Cup Series Food City 500 goes green on Sunday, March 17th. Stay up-to-date on the latest news at www.nascar.com.
