2013 Spring Home Horticulture schedule

The schedule for the Bonner County Gardeners Association is out! All classes are held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday evenings at the Ponderay Event Center, 401 Bonner Mall Way, Ste. E, Ponderay ID 83852.

March 20, 2013 – Designing Your Landscape with Native Plants, presented by Gail Bolin.

Gail is the President of the Kinnikinnick Native Plant Society, Vice-President of the Master Naturalists, has a Masters degree in Environmental Science and owns ‘Earth Wise’, a consulting company that specializes in native plant landscapes and habitat restoration, making her the perfect presenter for this class.

March 27, 2013- Making the Most of Your Home Greenhouse, presented by Nancy and John Hastings

Nancy and John are the owner’s of “All Seasons Garden and Floral” and have been growing vegetables in their greenhouse for over 15 years. The class will focus on the special considerations our area presents when constructing and using a home greenhouse.

April 3, 2013 – Pruning, presented by Gail Locke, Master Gardener

Pruning insures safety, increases yields, and maintains the health and appearance of a tree. Several techniques will be demonstrated. Learn when, how and what to prune, as well as equipment maintenance. Bring your tools if you want them evaluated.

April 10, 2013- Basic Gardening I, presented by Kit Cooley, Master Gardener

Getting started with growing vegetables. This first session will cover planning, choosing a location, preparing soil, seed selection and starting seeds indoors and out.

April 17, 2013 – Basic Gardening II, presented by Kit Cooley, Master Gardener

Review of seed starting. Transplantation, weed and pest control, general care and maintenance. Options for protecting plantings, container gardening, preparing for harvest and seed saving.

April 24, 2013 – Mushrooms – presented by Deborah Halcrow, past President of the Coeur d’Alene Mycological Society.

This class will concentrate on springtime mushrooms: where to find them and how to identify them, particularly morels. Learn the difference between the good and the bad before you pick!

May 1, 2013 – Berries – presented by Jon Bair, Master Gardener

Learn the varieties of berries that do well in the Inland Northwest and the techniques for successful growing and harvest. Jon will also touch on native berries.

May 8, 2013 – How and When to Harvest Your Garden – presented by Janae Dale, Ann Warwick, and Mikey Haven, Master Gardeners

These long time gardeners will teach you the tricks to knowing when your produce is ready for harvest and what to do with your produce to keep it through winter. They will also cover how to produce a continuous harvest of some vegetables.

All classes are $10 each. This covers the cost of venues, handouts and support of the activities of the non-profit Bonner County Gardeners Association. Payment can be made by sending or bringing a check to the BCGA office at 804 Airport Way, Sandpoint, ID 83864, along with a list of the classes you’ll be attending or via PayPal to bcgardeners@gmail.org, with a separate email to that address listing the classes you wish to attend.
