The road to the state boys soccer tournament gets underway Thursday with quarterfinal play in the 2013 Section 6AA tournament. Here's a look at the quarterfinal pairings.
In the first quarterfinal game, the top seeded Minneapolis Southwest Lakers take on the Armstrong Falcons. Southwest has been on of the most dominant teams in Class AA this season, holding a share of the top spot in some weeks with upstart East Ridge. Their lone loss was to Washburn and they played to a scoreless tie against South. The team to beat.
The fifth seeded Roseville Raiders will travel to the fourth seeded Minneapolis South Tigers in the second quarterfinal game. The Raiders, who lost to Wayzata and tied St. Louis Park could make things interesting against the defending section champion Tigers. South, who beat Wayzata and lost and tied to Southwest lost a number of players to graduation but they still have the talent from last year's tournament team. Can they make another run to the finals?
In the lower bracket, a pair of Lake Conference teams will battle for the third time when the sixth seeded Hopkins Royals take on the third seeded Wayzata Trojans. Wayzata swept Hopkins in both regular season meetings and they have a seven game unbeaten streak since they lost to Minnetonka on September 17. Keep your eye on the Trojans, they're a contender.
And finally, the seventh seeded Cooper Hawks face the second seeded St. Louis Park Orioles. The two teams met in the regular season with the Orioles shutting out the Hawks 2-0. Their only loss this season was to top 10 team North St. Paul. They have beaten quality opponents such as Totino-Grace and Benilde-St. Margaret's and tied section teams Roseville and Minneapolis South. Watch for a semifinal rematch between Wayzata and St. Louis Park. Be sure and bring a blanket if it gets chilly on the 12th since it might be another double overtime affair.
