The movie 12 Years a Slave has been one of the most awarded and lauded movies from 2013. How lauded? The movie, just this past weekend, won the Academy Award for Best Picture. It portrays the very brutal reality of slavery from a man who was kidnapped and sold into slavery when, prior to that, he had been living as a free man in the north. If you missed this film in theaters, now you can catch it at home.

The other movie that comes to the home video market is a remake of a popular Korean cult film. This one is directed by Spike Lee and was not particularly well received by the critics or the movie-going public when it was in theaters. Now you can see it in the comfort of your own home.

These are the movies coming to DVD March 4, 2014:

12 Years a Slave - Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael Fassbender, Lupita Nyong'o. The story of Solomon Northup, from a famous book by the same man, who was living as a free man in the north with his family. One day, he is kidnapped and finds himself whisked off to the south and sold into slavery. This is his story of survival and his attempts to get back north. The portrayals of slavery and the conditions under which slaves lived have already become legendary for their brutal portrayal. However, this movie was universally acclaimed and won Best Picture. Be warned, however, that this movie is brutal and violent at times. Rated R.

Oldboy - Josh Brolin, Elizabeth Olsen, Sharlto Copley. Spike Lee remakes the popular Korean cult film. It is a strange tale of a man who finds himself trapped in a cell with nothing but take-out Chinese food to eat and television to watch. He has been accused of murdering his wife and his child has been taken into foster care. Then, one day, he finds himself released into a field with no idea of who kidnapped him or who is behind this destruction of his life. Violence and revenge ensue. The original was notorious for its graphic violence and disturbing ending. This remake was not warmly received upon its release. Rated R.
