2013 predictions for Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony

To continue my week on what’s to come for video games in 2013, I’ll tackle the Big 3: Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony. With Nintendo already leading the charge with their new system, all eyes are on Sony and Microsoft. Will we see the PS4 and Xbox 720 this year, or are we in for some big Xbox 360 and PS3 surprises for the fall? Let’s see…

Nintendo:

  • The Wii U units will each drop $20 and a newer model will be announced
  • A new Metroid game will be announced for the 3DS and launch this fall
  • A new Zelda game for the 3DS and the Wii U will be announced, but neither will come out this year
  • Smash Brothers for the 3DS and Wii U will get shown off, but it will not come out this year
  • The eShop will release GameCube games on the Wii U and Gameboy Advance games on the 3DS
  • A Crystal Chronicles game will be announced, showcasing 3DS and Wii U compatibility

Microsoft:

  • The Xbox 720 will be announced prior to E3, showcasing the hardware, and E3 will primarily focus on games
  • The Xbox 720 will be backwards compatible, have some sort of streaming game service, and have a built in Kinect like device
  • A price will be given shortly before its arrival in November for about $400
  • Bungie’s new game, Destiny, will be a launch title for it
  • Surface will be a controllable option for games on the Xbox 720
  • New IPs will be teased and none of them, except Destiny, will release this year

Sony:

  • The PS4 will be shown off for the first time at E3 and more at a Sony event a month afterwards as well
  • It will not launch this year, but instead in February 2014
  • Uncharted 4, inFamous 3, and The Last Guardian will all be within the launch window of the PS4
  • Sony will either match, or lower it’s price based on Microsoft’s Xbox 720
  • All your PS1, PS2, and PSN downloadable games will transfer over to your PS4 account
  • The PS Vita and PS4 will be compatible with each other with the Vita acting like a controller and thus get a price drop this Fall in preparation for the PS4’s launch
