The 2013 People’s Choice Awards aired on Jan. 9 and there were definitely big TV winners, bigger surprises, and a few outstanding moments. Here’s how it all played out at the Nokia Theater on Wednesday night.
People’s Choice Awards: TV surprises in 2013
- “Grey’s Anatomy” is currently in its ninth season, but fans still love this perennial favorite. The medical drama beat newcomers “Gossip Girl,” “Grmimm,” “Once Upon a Time” and “Revenge” for the win. Ellen Pompeo also won a 2013 People’s Choice Award for Favorite Dramatic Actress.
- Steve Harvey won a People’s Choice Award for favorite new talk show host. He defeated bubbly Katie Couric, Jeff Probst of “Survivor” fame, footballer Michael Strahan and Ricki Lake.
- Despite lower ratings than its competitors, “The X Factor” defeated fan favorites “Dancing with the Stars,” “American Idol,” “America’s Got Talent” and “The Voice.” Judge Demi Lovato picked up a second “X Factor” win for Favorite Celebrity Judge.
- Only four shows won two People’s Choice Awards in 2013. They were “Supernatural,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Castle” and “The X Factor.”
- “Modern Family” wins almost every award that it’s nominated for, but “The Big Bang Theory” spoiled its People’s Choice victory in 2013.
- “Awkward,” a teen comedy series created by Lauren Iungerich for MTV, defeated fan favorites “Hot in Cleveland” with Betty White and “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” to win Favorite Cable TV Drama.
- Despite a huge fan base, AMC’s “The Walking Dead” did not win a single People’s Choice Award.
- This week, late night wars heated up when Jimmy Kimmel moved to 11: 35, but Jimmy Fallon beat everyone for Favorite Late Night Talk Show Host. He also won the PCA in 2012.
- Ellen DeGeneres won Favorite Daytime TV Host yet again. It was her 13th PCA win. She defeated heavyweight shows “Good Morning America,” “The Today Show,” “The View” and “Live with Kelly & Michael.” Ellen’s acceptance speech was refreshingly candid and funny and one of the night's best moments.
