2013 PA all-stars: The Reserves

The Pennsylvania list will always be near and dear to me. Until two months ago, I had lived in PA my whole life, and everything derby to me was PA related. Yes I have traveled. I have coached and played all over, but it’s the PA skaters that really have my heart. I love that, for the first time, we have more than just WFTDA skaters on our Pennsylvania list.

Introducing your reserves for Pennsylvania! As voted by you, these are the skaters that are in the 17-20 slots of the charter. Congrats to all the skaters for an amazing 2013.

Heavy Flo Philly Roller Girls – Philly had another incredible year of derby. Heavy Flo lost no style points this year for her blocking ability. Her skill in leveling top jammers with a precise swing of her backside is a beautiful sight to behold. During the Philly/Texas game at D1 playoffs in Richmond, she had the stands cheering with hammering hits that always struck their target.

Lurz Lemon – Pottstown Roller Derby/Dutchland Derby Rollers – The second Dutchland skater to earn recognition, Lurz started the season with Pottstown and then life took her away from her team. When I practiced with her the first time, I understood instantly why Pottstown was sad. She has an innate ability to pick up on strategy, her footwork is far better than it should be for how long she’s been in derby and the girl has got some ups. Keep your eyes on Dutchland in 2014. Lurz Lemon is going to be weapon the ladies in orange will be sure to utilize.

Evol Kitty Lehigh Valley Roller Girls – Her second year making the Top 20, anyone who’s skated with (or against) this co-founder of the PA All-Stars knows why fans love her. Nimble and quick-thinking, she is excellent at execution on the track as blocker and pivot. She is also an excellent communicator. It doesn’t matter the level of those in her pack, she is able to pull magic puppet strings and have them do exactly what she wants them to. The PA All-Stars have her for their upcoming tournament (which she is also helping to organize), and in 2014 you’ll find her wearing the Philly Roller Girls colors.

WagsPenn Jersey Hooligans – Our second man to be voted onto the PA list and the first to make the top 20! As Pivot/Jammer for the Hooligans, Wags can look out of place on the bank track, being exceptionally tall. You might expect him to be clumsy or awkward. You would be wrong. He is one of the most solid skaters on the team and when he puts on a burst of speed, blockers bounce off of him as he drives his way through. The other great thing about him? He’s always smiling and happy to be playing. Hooligans were playing OSDA and MADE last year. This year they make a run at the MRDA. Watch for Wags and other Hooligans on the flat track in 2014.

Thank you Juan Paden, Tyler Shaw, Papa Razzi, David A Carter, Jim Rhoades and Lynette Scoles for the photography in this article!
