With the film “Silver Linings Playbook” being nominated for 8 Oscars on Sunday night, Philadelphians have a lot to celebrate. The movie was based here, made here, and its main star, Bradley Cooper is from here. There hasn’t been a Philadelphia film this big since Rocky!
So, there are plenty of reasons to don the glamorous garb, and head out to one of these smashing affairs to cheer on our hometown’s moment in the spotlight.
Llanerch Diner
This venerable establishment plays a featured role in the Silver Linings Playbook, when Bradley Cooper’s character takes Jennifer Lawrence’s character there. He orders cereal to make it seem less like a date. Ever since the film came out, the Llanerch Diner (95 East Township Line Road, Upper Darby) has had a steady stream of customers coming in and requesting to be seated at the now famous booth where the scene was shot. The owners decided to get in on the action and throw an Oscar party this Sunday. It’s open to the public and free to get in. Black tie and gowns are suggested attire. It starts at 8 pm. All seven TVs will be on, and you know the crowd will cheer when (and if) the film wins any awards. 610-789-6057.
Loews Hotel
Volunteers of America Oscar Night Party at the Loews Philadelphia Hotel (12th and Market Streets) is a chance to experience a memorable evening, and give back to the community at the same time. Now in its tenth year, this pricey event hopes to raise over $230,000 for various charities. Tickets range from $250 per person to $400 per couple and include full dinner, cocktail hour and open bar, live entertainment, live and silent auctions, surprise guests, and viewing of the Oscars on big screens.
BEN-FM’s Marilyn Russell hosts the fashion show at 6 pm and Action News’ Rick Williams will be on hand to MC the rest of the evening.

Ritz Carlton Hotel
The Philadelphia Red Carpet Party for the Oscars at the 10 Arts Bistro and Lounge inside the Ritz Carlton (10 Avenue of the Arts, or Broad and Chestnut) is open to the public and free to get in with no reservations required. The show will be projected on a large wall in addition to some TV screens at the bar. Between 6 and 8 pm, there will be free glasses of Korbel champagne, lite fare and a dessert bar along with a DJ. Hosted by Philly fashionistas Kristin Detterlinos and Jimmy Contreras, the new spirit from George Clooney called Casamigos Tequila will be introduced for the first time in Pennsylvania. For added incentive to dress to impress, prizes will be awarded to the best-dressed man, woman and couple. For more information, call 215-523-8273. The Trust
University of Pennsylvania GAPSA (Graduate and Professional Student Assembly) throws a party in Old City at The Trust (3rd and Arch Streets). This is more about the party inside than what’s happening in L.A., as no sound from the TV Show will be heard. So, while you’ll be able to watch the Oscars on TV, you won’t hear them; instead, a DJ will supply the music. You’ll find a red carpet, food, cocktails and a full dinner and dessert buffet. Reasonably priced at $5-$15. Starts at 6 p.m. and party dresses and tuxes will abound. More information online here.
Bryn Mawr Film Institute
The Best Exotic Oscar Party is the theme of this fifth annual event held outside the city, on the Main Line at the Bryn Mawr Film Institute (824 W Lancaster Avenue, Bryn Mawr) starting at 7 p.m. The 85th Academy Awards will be shown, there will be a bazaar-style Festival Sale provided by Ten Thousand Villages, gourmet buffet dinner, cash bar, music, and prizes. An all-expense trip to Rome will be raffled off. Tickets are sold online or at the box office beforehand and at the door the night of event. 150 people are expected. Tickets are $70 for the public or $60 for BMFI members. Proceeds go toward funding this non-profit community theater. Dress is exotic around the world attire.
