I love the all-star articles for one main reason: as a derby community, we get to recognize skaters that aren’t always in the limelight. Sometimes because there are many big names on their team, so they sometimes get overlooked. Sometimes because they are from a small league that derby, at large, ignores.
Ozzie Clobberpot – NJ Hellrazors
You’ve never heard of the NJ Hellrazors (or if you have, you’re probably from a nearby league). Ozzie has been skating for several seasons, and each year her technique improves. She is a strong blocker who relies on the power in her booty to knock over feisty jammers. As a member of the New Jersey All Star team, she was a leader on the floor and an important piece of every wall. She definitely jams like a blocker – unafraid to hit her way out of a pack and take a few people down as she’s scoring points. Watch for her on a new team next season: Ozzie recently made the hop over to the Garden State Rollergirls, and I am sure they are happy to have her.
OMG is a blocker that you forget is on the floor, unless you watch her. She is a ninja blocker who is always making something happen in the pack – even if you don’t realize it’s her doing it. Strong as a point in the triangle, OMG can direct the pack of her team mates like a maestro conducts an orchestra. She is lean and terribly strong; she is masterfully at keeping her body in front of yours. It’s her synchronization and psychic force she has with her team that helped Gotham become the dynasty of derby.
As a side note: she is one a skater that I always see smiling: in photos, on footage, and in person. I have only met her briefly once (behind the scenes of the Derby Ink Invitational) and I can honestly say that she left an amazing impression on me as a genuinely good-hearted person and a skater who cares about the sport on all levels. So. That’s awesome too.
