The Wallys for the 2013 Carlyle Tools NHRA Carolina Nationals have been handed out, and Morgan Lucas (Top Fuel), Robert Hight (Funny Car), Jeg Coughlin Jr. (Pro Stock) and Andrew Hines (Pro stock Motorcycle) are taking home the hardware from zMAX Dragway in Concord, North Carolina.
No. 1 qualifier Lucas took early-round wins against Terry McMillen, teammate Brandon Bernstein and Doug Kalitta into the final round against Spencer Massey. It was the second win of the season for Lucas, who ranked eighth in the reset Top Fuel standings going into zMAX Dragway.
Funny Car was a classic John Force Racing-Don Schumacher Racing match-up in the finals, with Hight, who ranked ninth coming into this weekend’s event, taking the win over top seed Matt Hagan. Hight earned round wins against Chad Head, Cruz Pedregon and JFR teammate Courtney Force to reach the finals.
Pedregon was unable to back-up his 3.980-second run from Friday, and the national record set last year at Reading by Jack Beckman still stands.
Third-ranked Coughlin Jr. defeated No. 1 qualifier Jason Line in the finals in Pro Stock. Coughlin Jr. took wins over Greg Stanfield, Shane Gray and Mike Edwards in early rounds.
Hines, who did not qualify for the Countdown this season, took home the PSM Wally after beating Hector Arana in the finals. Hines took round wins over John Hall, No. 1 qualifier Matt Smith and LE Tonglet on his way to the finals.
The NHRA Countdown to the Championship continues next weekend, Thursday through Sunday, September 19th through 22nd at Texas Motorplex in Ennis, Texas, site of the AAA Texas NHRA Fall Nationals. Keep up with NHRA action at www.nhra.com.
