The National Hockey League announced today that 2013 Bridgestone Winter Classic will be held at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor as the Detroit Red Wings will battle the Toronto Maple Leafs in front of what many believe will be a record crowd on January 1, 2013.
The announcement came this morning during a press conference at Comerica Park in Detroit. A second presser is set for this afternoon in Ann Arbor.
This game will mark the second outdoor game for the Red Wings, who played the Chicago Blackhawks at Wrigley Field in 2009 and the second time an outdoor hockey game was held at Michigan Stadium. In 2010, Michigan battled Michigan State in ‘The Big Chill’ in front of over 104,000.
In addition to the Winter Classic being played in Ann Arbor, a week long festival (leading up the Winter Classic) known as the Hockeytown Winter Festival will take place in Detroit, which will include a NHL Legends game outdoors at Comerica Park.
