The NFL is back! NFL fans can rejoice as the first full day of football can be seen via online live stream or live on television today with 13 games on the schedule. Week 1 of the 2013 NFL season officially began last Thursday night when the Denver Broncos thrashed the Baltimore Ravens, but today is the first full schedule of Sunday games including the Minnesota Vikings vs. Detroit Lions.
Is there such a thing as a “must win” in a season opener?
Well for the Lions there may be.
According to a Sportsline report on Sept. 8 the Lions dropped both contests last season to the Vikings, yet Detroit is the Las Vegas oddsmakers favorite to win today’s game. The Lions come into the season opener as 4 point favorites over the Vikings.
Coming off a disappointing 2012 season the Lions can’t afford to stumble vs. the Vikings if they plan on making the playoffs. Sure, it's only Week 1 and one game doesn't make a season. However, the fact that Detroit will play four of their next five games on the road (including trips to Washington and Green Bay where they haven't won in decades) they really need to start 2013 on the right foot.
It’s no secret that the Vikings go as Adrian Peterson goes and the Lions know this. However the question is can Detroit bottle up the Pro-Bowl running back? The same question goes for the Vikings when it comes to trying to bottle up Calvin Johnson and Reggie Bush.
You can catch this exciting opening day match-up locally here in Detroit on FOX or steaming online multiple different ways through NFL.com's live streaming options.
Now the big question, who will be the Vegas point spread winner. Well so far so good in the picks against the spread as the record officially stands at 1-0 for 2013 as Denver rolled over the Ravens. Be sure to click here to see my other picks for Week 1.
As for this game, it's put up or shut up for Detroit. The pieces that were missing last season seem to be there this year. Detroit should get the "W" today.
