The 2013 NFL campaign kicks off tonight to conclude another nigh interminable off season. America's true pastime comes back with a bang, pitting the defending Super Bowl Champion Baltimore Ravens against the team that should have won it, the Denver Broncos. Across this great nation football is today's topic of conversation. Everyone's got an opinion, some of them are sensible. Many that aren't have made their way to Twitter:
@DenverBroncos has been posting a photographic countdown to kickoff. The montage is well conceived and constructed. Residing in one of the other AFC West cities where the Broncos are going to wreak havoc again this year only slightly diminishes the effectiveness.
Bronco legend, and Denver's current Executive Vice President of Operations, John Elway, wants to thank the 45,000 fans who came out in the rain to watch the team scrimmage on August 3rd. Yes, there is an actual game tonight, but John has never been one to lose sight of what's truly important.
A few non-football fans have initiated a stream of #WorstPickUpLines, a number of which are rather clever. Ellen DeGeneres, yes, that Ellen DeGeneres, has contributed, tweeting: "Are you gonna finish that sandwich?" It's funny because asking someone to finish their sandwich would be really ineffective as a pick up line.
SportsPickle has remained surprisingly silent about tonight's game, though we expect to hear from them as soon as NBC commentator, Cris Collinsworth, opens his mouth.
The @NBC Twitter feed hasn't posted anything about the rather significant game they are about to broadcast either, though this is not terribly surprising. NBC cares a lot more about talent shows than sports these days.
In reference to the above, NBC choose Ryan Seacrest to open the broadcast. The game was subsequently delayed by a lightning storm. Whichever divinity you believe in, she or he does not appreciate all the festering reality TV nonsense.
Oh look, The Star Spangled Banner is being performed by one of the winning contestants of The Voice, which airs on, of all places, NBC. Can't wait for Cee Lo Green to announce the starting lineups..
