2014 New Year's Eve/Day events for families in St. Charles County

The St. Charles Chill, the area's newest professional hockey team, is currently in its inaugural season at Family Arena. The team provides inexpensive entertainment around a minor league hockey game for families.

Individual ticket prices start at $5. After The Chill's Dec. 31 game free open skating is available on the rink with the team. Fans can bring their own skates or rent them at the arena. The Chill is also offering a New Year's Eve family package which includes four tickets next to the glass, four hot dogs, four chips, and four cans of Pepsi for $60. Website info.

St. Charles County YMCAs may have altered hours over the holiday, but all will host an Open House on New Year's Day with special activities. Check the individual websites for hours of operation on Dec. 31 and Jan. 1, as well as a list of activities during their open houses.

City recreation centers in O'Fallon and St. Peters also have special hours and events on Dec. 31 and Jan. 1.

O'Fallon's Renaud Spirit Center is open both Tuesday and Wednesday with normal business hours. An extra open public swim is scheduled on both days from noon - 3:30pm. In addition, members may bring an unlimited number of guests on Tuesday during normal hours. Website info.

In St. Peters, the city's Rec-Plex will have a New Year’s Eve Lock-in from 7 p.m., Dec. 31 to 7 a.m. Jan. 1 (5200 Mexico Road). The event is for kids ages 8-13. It includes swimming, diving, ice skating, basketball, and games. The lock-in will be staffed with chaperones as well as lifeguards in the pool area. Everyone will ring in the New Year with a midnight balloon drop. Kids should bring pillows and sleeping bags and advance registration is required. The event is free to Gold Plus members, $25 for Rec-Plex annual members, $50 for resident non-members, and $60 for the all others. Website info.

Bowling is a fun family activity and a game or two isn't costly--even if you have to rent shoes. Many bowling alleys in St. Charles County will be open on New Year's Eve as well as New Year's Day. However, they may have altered hours both days. It's best to plan ahead and check out hours by calling or viewing a website before you visit. Some bowling centers in the County include:
