2013 Naughty and Nice List

See also

If you're looking where to shop for your last minute Christmas gifts, you may want to patronize those stores that literally care about Christmas.

Each year the American Family Association (AFA) makes its own "naughty and nice" list of major retailers.

Its criteria is simple. AFA reviewers examine all documented promotional activity to see if the word "Christmas" is used (and how often.) Then advertisers are classified accordingly.

You'd be surprised how many avoid the use of the word to avoid offending non-Christian patrons or to appear "politically correct."

Here are AFA's results for the companies here represented in Orange County.

Companies FOR "Christmas, those that use the term regularly:
Ace Hardware
Amazon.com
Bass Pro Shops
Bed Bath & Beyond
Big Lots
Costco
Dick's Sporting Goods
Dollar Tree
Gap, Inc.
Hallmark
Home Depot
HSN.com
Home Shopping Network
JCPenney
JoAnn's Fabrics
Kohl's
L.L.Bean
Lowes
Macy's
Marshals
Michaels
Neiman Marcus
Nordstrom
Office Max
Old Navy
Pier One
Proflowers.com
QVC.com
Ralph's
Rite Aid
Sears
Target
T J Maxx
Toys R Us
Walgreen's
Wal-Mart;

Companies that refer to "Christmas" infrequently or in a single medium:
1-800-Flowers
Bath & Body Works
Best Buy
CVS Pharmacy
Limited Brands
Vons
Starbucks
True Value Hardware
Walgreens
Whole Foods

These companies may use "Christmas" sparingly in a single or unique product description, but as a company, does not recognize it.

Barnes & Noble
Footlocker
Gap Stores
Office Depot
Old Navy
Petsmart
Radio Shack
Staples
Victoria's Secret

This season Old Navy switched from "naughty" to "nice", and Petsmart went in the opposite direction. Despite tens of thousands of consumer requests Radio Shack still refused to recognize Christmas in any of its promotion. Consequently the AFA has called for a boycott.

AFA says a good way to check out a retailer is to go to its website and type in the word "Christmas" in its search bar.

If stopping censorship of the word "Christmas " is important to you as consumer, you can vote with your partonage.

Last time I heard we still called them "Christmas gifts", and we still ask "what did you get for Christmas?" Right?
