So, what can deep fried thrill seekers expect to see from the concessions at this year’s state fair? According to Heather Overton of the North Carolina Department of Agriculture, fairgoers have the opportunity to snack on deep-fried frog legs and deep-fried ice cream.
That’s right. Deep fried frog legs. The frog legs will be offered by the vendor Ragin Cajun and may very well elicit a few responses like “it tastes like fried…chicken?”.
And over by the Jim Graham Building, hot and cold will unite in a dessert when Scoops Ice Cream puts a deep-fried spin on the traditional scoop of ice cream.
East will meet West in a new twist when Woody’s serves up its barbecue egg roll. The fair creation will be stuffed with North Carolina Eastern-style pulled-pork barbecue and homemade coleslaw, rolled up in an egg roll wrapper and deep fried until it’s golden brown and crispy. And, don’t expect any plastic packets of sweet and sour sauce or duck sauce to come with the egg roll. The barbecue-slaw egg roll appropriately comes with own side of barbecue dipping sauce.
Fairgoers with a sweet tooth may look towards the perennial state fair treat on a stick: the candy apple. This year’s candy apples do have a few new tricks up their sleeves though.
Brinkley’s is upping the candy apple game this year with its state fair food entry, a Granny Smith apple covered with crushed Warheads candy.
And if you dare, dip your toes into the gourmet apple behemoth known as the “Double Decker Doozy” from Miss Debbie’s Specialty Apples. It’s a sweets bric-a-brac tower of chocolate-dipped caramel apples and mini-candy bars, smothered in marshmallow fluff and decorated with M&M’s, gummy worms and turtle candies.
For those hankering for a cronut, but too far away to make the trek to New York City for the donut and croissant pastry portmanteau, perhaps you can settle for the Sloppy Joe donut burger this year at the state fair. Conventional sandwich buns are tossed aside and replaced by glazed donuts that will encase mounds of Sloppy Joe filling, a mix of seasoned ground beef and shredded cheddar cheese. Antacids not included with each purchase of the Sloppy Joe donut burger.
The 2013 North Carolina State Fair begins this year on October 17 and will last until October 27. You can find a complete list of fair food vendors here and may keep up with the latest news from the official State Fair Deep Fried blog here.
