2013 in Movies: the last six months

See also

2013 has come to a close, which means it's once again time for my look-back at the best and worst movies of the past six months.

From July through December, I saw 41 flicks... and, yes, I missed a handful-- but most of them were intentional (Insidious: Chapter 2, The Fifth Estate, Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa).

Without further ado, away we go...

Far better than I expected (and, frankly, great in its own right): Prisoners
Runner-up: 2 Guns
Biggest disappointment (by far): The Lone Ranger

Best kids movie: Frozen
Runner-up: Despicable Me 2
Lamest kids movie: Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2

Funniest movie: The World's End
Runner-up: The Wolf of Wall Street
I thought this was supposed to be a comedy?!: Delivery Man

Best movie no one saw: About Time
Runner-up: Don Jon
Worst movie everyone saw: Thor - The Dark World

Biggest squandered potential: The Secret Life of Walter Mitty
Runner-up: Ender's Game
Zero potential but somehow pulled it off: We're the Millers

Best nail-biting action: Captain Phillips
Runner-up: The Hunger Games – Catching Fire
Most yawn-worthy action: R.I.P.D.

Most egregious cash grab: Planes
Runner-up: The Wolverine
Cash grab done right: Red 2

Worst use of good talent: Last Vegas
Runner-up: The Family
Best use of scant big-name talent: Pacific Rim

Best “lives up to its title” movie: Rush
Runner-up: Turbo
Sadly this does, too: Getaway

Most important movie: 12 Years a Slave
Runner-up: Lee Daniels’ The Butler
It’s important to forget this movie ever happened: Jobs

Coolest creatures/visual effects: The Hobbit – The Desolation of Smaug
Runner-up: Percy Jackson - Sea of Monsters
Worst: The Mortal Instruments – The City of Bones

Best period piece: American Hustle
Runner-up: Saving Mr. Banks
One of the worst, period: Paranoia

Even better now that I think about it: Anchorman 2
Runner-up: Elysium
Even worse now that I think about it: The Smurfs 2

and finally…

Best Movie: Gravity

Worst Movie: Kick-Ass 2
