2013 Martin Luther King Jr. birthday celebrations in Jackson (Video)

With its own place in the history of the civil rights movement, there will be several MLK celebration events in the Jackson, Mississippi area this year. They will highlight the birth and contributions of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. who championed the fight for racial equality and social justice.

On Friday, January 18, 2013 at 10 a.m., there will be a MLK Birthday Convocation at the Jackson State campus' Rose McCoy Auditorium. The event is free and open to the public.

Also, at 11:45 a.m. in the Jackson State Student Center Ballroom there will be the 18th annual For My People Awards luncheon. The event is given by the Margaret Walker Alexander Center and is also free to the public.

The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Celebration Parade will take place on Saturday, January 19, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. on Freedom Corner which is located between Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and Medgar Evers Boulevard.

Participants in the parade are encouraged to RSVP to May Jones at 601-960-1090. They should also be prepared to line up at 8:30 a.m. at Brinkley Middle School located at 3535 Albermarle Road.

The Annual Millsaps/Tougaloo Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration will take place on January 21, 2013 at the Leggett Center in the Campbell College Center on the Millsap College campus. At 9 a.m. there will be a continental breakfast followed by a lecture at 10 a.m. from Millsaps alumnus and U. S. Court of Appeals Judge James Graves.
