2013 KBM preview: Joey Coulter

Joey Coulter joins the Kyle Busch Motorsports family in 2013 as driver of the No. 18 Toyota Tundra in the Camping World Truck Series. Coulter, entering his third season in the Truck Series, comes to KBM after two seasons with Richard Childress Racing, where he earned his first win last August at Pocono Raceway.

Coulter, 22, spent two seasons in the ARCA Racing Series with crew chief Harold Holly before making the move to the Truck Series. In 2011, Coulter was named Rookie of the Year in Trucks while finishing seventh in points, improving to third in 2012 – also with Holly. So it shouldn’t come as a surprise that, when KBM was looking for a crew chief for the No. 18 Toyota, Holly was at the top of the list.

“Being able to join Kyle Busch Motorsports and continue to help Joey grow at the same time is a pretty special thing,” said Holly on the KBM website. “Kyle brings a lot to the sport and a lot to the Truck Series, so I’m looking forward to the opportunity to work for his organization. Joey and I have spent the last couple years learning this series and what it takes to points race with these guys. We’ve gotten better each year and I think we have a good plan going into next season. The biggest thing is that we need to come out of Daytona with a solid finish. Last year, we got so far behind at the beginning and had to make up so much ground at the end.”

In 2012, Coulter added 14 more top 10 finishes to his first win, as well as three poles, ending the season with an average finish of 8.5. Coulter also made two Nationwide Series starts for RCR, earning a 10th-place finish at Charlotte and at 14th-place finish at the season finale at Homestead-Miami.

Joey Coulter statistics:

  • Best Truck Series tracks (average finish) – Pocono Raceway (3.5 in two races), Homestead-Miami Speedway (4.0 in two races), Bristol Motor Speedway (5.0 in two races)
  • Worst Truck Series tracks (average finish) – Darlington Speedway (28.0 in one race), Daytona International Speedway (26.0 in two races)
